Combat Depression Naturally with Vitamin D

We’ve all experienced those glorious moments of putting your face to the sun to absorb its rays of goodness and your whole body says “ahhh”.  You relax and feel a sense of wellbeing, but that’s not just because of the warmth and feelings of being nurtured, it’s also because it activates our body’s production of Vitamin D, something it can’t do without sunlight.  Pretty amazing right?  This vitamin’s effect on the body is impressive and there is a direct correlation between depression and Vitamin D deficiency.  If you or someone you love struggles with depression, take a closer look at supplementing with Vitamin D and some of these other natural options.

Fewer hours of sunlight = increased opportunity to become deficient in Vitamin D: It’s no coincidence that people seem happier in the sunnier and warmer months of the year than in the winter months and this can be connected to Vitamin D. Vitamin D is naturally made in the body but needs rays of sunlight to activate the reaction in the skin. Even though our bodies are able to produce the vitamin supplementation is often needed. Vitamin D is not technically a vitamin but a hormone, and considering the correlation hormones have with mental well-being, it’s understandable that a healthy level of Vitamin D in the system is necessary. Youth and older adults are at a greater risk of becoming depressed due to a deficiency of Vitamin D, an important fact to consider before the assumption of a mental illness is reached. In order to check our Vitamin D levels you will need a simple blood test done at a doctor’s office or in a laboratory. Looking for a supplement? We have sublingualtablet or soft gel.

Another hormone that impacts your mental wellness is serotonin, the “feel good” hormone that triggers feelings of pleasure, well-being and satisfaction. Where antidepressant drugs suppress the body from breaking down the hormone (thereby increasing its concentration) there are gentler and more natural ways to increase the presence of serotonin in the body without harmful side-effects. L-tryptophan and 5-HTP are precursors to serotonin which simply means they must be present before serotonin can be produced in the body. Depletion of tryptophan in the body has been shown to lead to depression (as serotonin levels cannot be maintained or increased) and clinical studies have shown that the use of 5-HTP for depression has been just as effective for depression as standard antidepressant drugs. Check out this 5-HTP sublingual or thiscapsule as well as how gut health plays a role in mental health inThe GI Tract, Mood and Gut Health.

Because serotonin levels are impacted by how quickly or slowly the hormone is metabolized in the body, the compounds that are responsible for the metabolization also play in role in mental wellness and warding off mood disorders.SAMe is a compound of methionine and ATP, two proteinogen amino acids that occur naturally in the body, and influences the metabolizing of serotonin. Studies have shown that supplementing with SAMe is just as effective for depression as antidepressant drugs.

St. John’s Wort has long been a celebrated herb for assisting with mood and warding off depression and Kroeger Herb has a great Complete Concentrate and a tincture available. Other benefits of St. John’s Wort are that it can assist with sleep disorders, nerve pain and viral infections. Long-term, daily use of St. John’s Wort has proven the most beneficial though not everyone should take this herb.  St. John’s wort interacts with some commonly used prescription and over-the-counter drugs. DO NOT USE this supplement if you are taking contraceptives, antidepressants, immunosuppressants (such as cyclosporine), anticoagulants, Digoxin, HIV medicine, blood thinners, seizure-control medicine, cancer medicine, or any other medications.

Depression is more common than you may think and affects one in ten adults in the United States with nearly half of the population set to experience an episode of depression at some point in their life. Being proactive and addressing the signs and symptoms of depression naturally can reduce your chance of risk. With so many options for how to administer a product (liquid, capsule, gel capsule, pellet, tablet) it’s hard to understand why one may be beneficial over another. If you have the choice between a sublingual or oral supplement, do you know which to choose? With so many options for how to administer a product (liquid, capsule, gel capsule, pellet, tablet) it’s hard to understand why one may be beneficial over another. Because more products are now available as a sublingual as well as through oral administration, we wanted to be sure to outline why sublingual is a safe and effective way to take your supplements, especially if you have difficulty swallowing pills.

As a child I had a difficult time swallowing pills. I would take them one-at-a-time, place them on the back of my tongue, take a gulp of water and feel certain that I had just swallowed a chicken bone and would never be able to properly eat food again. A bit dramatic but if you have trouble swallowing pills, you know what I mean. Sublingual administration would have saved the day for me and luckily, as an adult, I now have that option. Sublingual is Latin for “under the tongue” and it is simply that: supplements, pharmaceuticals, enzymes, and some vitamins and minerals you place under your tongue and allow to dissolve. The mucous membrane beneath our tongue is an ideal place to dissolve a substance because of the concentration of capillaries in this area. A substance is placed beneath the tongue, dissolution happens quickly, and the capillaries carry the compounds of the substance into venous circulation. Because the compounds are now in your blood stream you are able to attain the benefits, healing, or relief quicker than through oral administration which relies on the intestines for absorption.

When we choose oral administration for our herbs or medicine we are waiting for much longer than sublingual to attain the benefits. When we swallow a pill it must first pass through our stomachs and into our intestine where it can begin to be absorbed. It isn’t until the substance has been metabolized in the liver that it actually enters general circulation. Because of this passage from mouth to liver for the benefits to come, some argue that sublingual administration is superior not only for how quickly healing can begin but also for the potency of the item you’re taking. When relying only on saliva and the enzymes found within it to break down a substance it seems reasonable to believe the efficacy of the item hasn’t been degraded as much as a pill taken orally and passed through the hostile acids within the stomach and gastrointestinal tract before being altered and broken down by the liver. Considering the substance will be broken down then changed into a useable form by the liver for the body, an easily absorbed sublingual administration is argued to be more effective and vitamin A is one example where this method might be preferred.

Our bodies utilize vitamin A for healthy eye function, strong bones and teeth, to keep our skin healthy, to boost our immune system and as a powerful antioxidant. Vitamin A is essential for the health of so much of our body including our urinary tract where it can help prevent the formation of urinary stones. As we age the function of our body slows and our bones, teeth, and eyes need the extra boost provided from vitamin A. Likewise, as our systems mature, we are more susceptible to illness and the effects of sun and pollution. Taking vitamin A daily not only strengthens the mucous membranes of our bodies (lining of the eyes, urinary and intestinal tract, and respiratory system) but it also boosts our white blood cell count (our body’s natural infection fighters). As an antioxidant, vitamin A can reduce the damage caused by the sun as well as acting as a sweeper of free radicals in your system. Learn more about free radicals and antioxidants. A sublingual vitamin A is an excellent choice if you have difficulty swallowing pills or if you’d like to be sure you’re meeting your daily recommended intake quickly and easily. We carry an instant dissolve microlingual from Superior Source that goes to work quickly. With 10,000 IU of vitamin A in each microlingual you’ll need only one each day.

In theory, sublingual administration does have certain advantages over oral: the route is faster and the substance comes in contact only with one’s saliva before entering the bloodstream. Sublingual administration is safe for adults and children for any substance that will dissolve easily with only the encouragement of saliva but there are some risks to note. If you have been eating, drinking, or smoking, there may be a change in how effective the substance may be. Additionally it is not recommended to take medications sublingually over a long period of time as discoloration of the teeth can occur. Please note that this applies to prescription drugs and not our vibropathic pellets. Finally, if you have open sores in your mouth consider a different type of administration as the sores may become further irritated and

require a longer healing period.
