Caring for Joints, Cartilage & Bones for a Pain Free Future

When a good rhythm strikes and the mood is right, it’s hard not to start tapping a foot along with the music. There’s something natural and instinctive about dancing—it’s fun, expressive, and just plain feels good! Dance leaves behind no physical trace, so its documentation in history is blurred. Did it begin as a call to battle? Was dancing a spiritual practice used to reach some entranced state? Were rain dances the first of their kind? Every culture and every person has their own distinct way of moving. Whether you have slick salsa moves hiding up your sleeve or the “Jitterbug” is more your thing, good joint health will keep you dancing smoothly for years to come!

Joint Care for a Pain-Free Future

Joint pain is a condition that many people accept as a symptom of getting older. Grinding, cracking, creaking, and stiffness are signs of wear-and-tear, but there is no reason why your joints need to age faster than you.  Most joint pain is the result of cartilage and ligament damage from minor injuries early in life. After enough erosion, movement becomes uncomfortable and osteoarthritis becomes an issue. There are several types of joints in the body—some are “ball and sockets” while others are more like hinges. Every joint is made up of the same build blocks: bone, cartilage, and ligaments. Supplementing with the right minerals, getting regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and eating a healthy diet can all help you prevent future joint pain and recover from joint injuries faster.

Bone Health

The building block of cartilage, collagen, is essential to joint health.

Caring for Cartilage

Cartilage is a type of connective tissue that serves as padding in your joints. Softer than bone, it works as a shock absorber in your joints. A layer of cartilage encases the ends of bones that make up joints, and protects them from damage. Cartilage can become damaged through joint over use, minor injuries (such as tweaking your knee), or major injury (such as dislocation). Originally smooth, worn cartilage can become rough and eroded over time. This erosion will keep your joints from rolling smoothly, and may eventually be a factor in osteoarthritis as cartilage does not recover from damage the same way the rest of your body might. While our bodies are unable to rebuild cartilage that is already lost, you can ensure that the cartilage you still have is in good shape. Support joint cartilage by taking collagen and glucosamine sulfate.

We recommend collagen Type 2 specifically formulated for joint health. A precursor for glycosaminoglycans, a major component of joint cartilage, Glucosamine Sulfate has been shown to relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis. In addition, you might want to try Extra Strength Glucosamine Sulfate by NOW. Keep in mind that body weight can play a big role in how much stress is put on your joints, especially the knees so maintain a healthy body weight to minimize pressure on your cartilage.

Build Up Your Bones

Keeping your muscles strong can help minimize stress to your ligaments

From below your cartilage, bones form the structure and arrangement of joints. Calcium and Vitamin D are vital building blocks to all bones. A lack of calcium may result in loss of bone mass over time and a higher risk of fractures and breaks. Injuries such as fractures often occur close to joints, and can cause inflammation and damage. Calcium supplements are available in a variety of forms, such as this Berry Flavored Liquid from Solgarsoft Gels, andtablets. Calcium’s companion is Vitamin D which allows the body to absorb calcium as our bodies are able to synthesize vitamin D from sunlight, however sedimentary individuals and those living in cloudy places may need to supplement.

Life-Long Ligament Health

Ligaments are the connective tissues that attach muscles to bones and put joints into motion. Overuse and misuse can put stress on ligaments and tendons, creating inflammation. Ligaments need proper nourishment to stay healthy. Liga-Tend is a supplement formulated by Country Life designed to support strong ligaments, bones and joints.  It contains L-Proline, a major component in collagen, as well as Manganese, a trace mineral that helps the body form connective tissue and bone assisting in calcium absorption.  It also contains vitamin C, which is essential in the body’s ability to synthesis collagen as well as skin, bone and joint health. Rounding out this formula are vitamins and minerals including calcium as well as shark cartilage and glycine, which has been found to help prevent degenerative bone diseases. In combination with regular exercise, Liga-Tend can help you maintain healthy joints. Since ligaments are attached to muscles, keeping your muscles strong can help minimize stress to your ligaments. Regular exercise will keep your joints moving, but be smart: know your limits, as strenuous movements could be the cause of injury. Ask a coach or a trainer for exercise modifications that are right for your body.

Stop Joint Inflammation

Inflammatory cells, a result of injuries small and large, will release chemicals that may be destructive to cartilage. Inflammation may also be the cause of ligament and tendon pain. Natural anti-inflammatory foods have been shown to be as effective as medication in fighting pain. Omega-3 fatty acids, in particular, can reduce symptoms of joint pain. Try adding natural anti-inflammatory foods into your diet! Ginger and turmeric have been shown to fight inflammation. Hanna developed a series of recipes for treating arthritis that cut back on inflammation and pain. Check them out, here, or find other natural arthritis remedies.

The Bone and Joint section at Hanna’s Herb Shop is full of oral and topical remedies that will help you prevent joint pain and relieve any existing joint injuries. Remember, making good choices today will change the future of your joint health. Keep your spot on the dance floor! Healthy lifestyle choices can keep your joints in good health for years to come.

Turmeric and other supplements act as powerful natural remedies for skin

Maybe you’ve heard of Resveratrol and the powerful boost it provides to the health of your skin, but how? Resveratrol is a compound found primarily in red-grape skins that protects against the damage of free radicals, mostly by fending off harmful UV rays. Kroeger Herb has created Resveratrol Six which uses the compound found in Japanese Knotweed for the most potent supply of Resveratrol on the market. Research shows that using a Resveratrol supplement along with a lotion will provide the best results externally but keep in mind that the power of this supplement is greatest in repairing cells. Want to learn more about Resveratrol Six from Kroeger? Check out this post.

Fruit concentrates like Black Cherry, Pomegranate, Grape Seed, and Cranberry are also an effective way to promote healthy skin and can be an easy way to improve hydration of skin, sweep away skin-damaging free radicals, and counteract the damage they have caused. Results in testing show that using a combination of several types of fruit concentrates works best so be creative in what you choose and, when one bottle is empty feel free to try a new concentrate.

Hyaluronic acid is a hydrating, gel-like molecule that holds a thousand times its weight in water, drawing moister from the air to fill in wrinkles says Delicious Living Magazine. This substance is used in serums, creams, gel caps, and liquid supplements and reduces the appearance of fine lines.

Fatty acids, like Hyaluronic acid, reduce the appearance of wrinkles but also boost hair and scalp health, as well as moisturizing the skin. Omega-3, -6, -7, and -9 are fatty acids that may replenish moisture to stave off acne and wrinkles and may even reduce inflammation (think puffy eyes in the morning or aching joints). Fatty acids also help to thicken skin, improve elasticity, and ward off visible signs of aging. (Learn more about omegas here).

Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory that also improves the appearance and condition of skin and can be used in conjunction with any of the supplements listed above. This antioxidant rich capsule is an asset to a healthy skin regimen and has been used for thousands of years topically to improve skin conditions like eczema, acne, and psoriasis. Taking a Turmeric supplement for several months will provide the skin with a youthful and healthy glow as well without the damage of the sun! Learn more about the benefits Turmeric provides not only to the skin but for the entire body in this post.

Food Remedies for Skin

Fresh strawberries for beautiful skin!

Berries and other food remedies for skin offer support for clear, youthful, healthy glow and appearance!

Increasing your intake in foods that are rich in nutrients your skin needs is important. Lycopene, found in tomatoes, helps to protect against UV rays while improving skin hydration and thickness. Carotenoids- the antioxidants found in sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, and kale-provide a glow to skin while counter-acting free radical damage in the system. Foods rich in chlorophyll are also beneficial to the feel and appearance of the skin because they assist the liver in functioning properly. Our livers work overtime to filter our system and if the liver isn’t happy, it shows on the outside and has a negative impact inside. Chlorophyll rich foods include sea vegetables, romaine, broccoli, green peas, leeks, bell peppers, and most any type of leafy vegetable. Keep an eye out for fruits that are in season and provide antioxidant rich content like grapes and berries to boost the appearance of skin and sweep skin-damaging free radicals from your system.

These food and supplement remedies for skin are important to integrate if you’re trying to achieve a youthful glow and clear complexion naturally. Hydration is also an important factor so be sure to drink plenty of water and tea and feel free to add slices of cucumber, mint, citrus, or berries for flavor!

Get creative with your skin care regimen and be on the lookout for outlandish claims from products made with harmful chemicals and avoid them when possible. There’s a reason Hippocrates said we should let our food be our medicine and our medicine our food; nature provides the remedies for skin and beyond. The popularity of Turmeric is on the rise, and for good reason. Not only is this delicious spice a great addition to meals but it also has several health benefits and is quickly becoming the talk of the natural health world. We’ve shared the health benefits of Turmeric for digestion and skin in a recent post but we wanted to shine the spotlight on Turmeric’s ability to benefit the heart.

Turmeric’s Benefits for the Heart

Beautiful and powerful, check out all the reasons Turmeric is my favorite healing spice.

Turmeric's benefits for the heart (and entire body!) are as striking as its color!

NPR recently shared a story about how Penn State research has provided strong evidence that spicy foods assist the heart, even in fatty meals. Through their work they noted that cloves, cinnamon, and turmericwere surprisingly beneficial to decreasing triglycerides and insulin levels. The study included a group of people and two versions of a high fat meal. One meal contained low levels of spices and the second contained bold amounts. Blood levels of participants were checked following each meal and triglyceride levels dropped a third and insulin levels dropped 20% following the spicy meal. While both versions of the dish contained oily sauce and high fat content, the meal containing low levels of spice showed a rise in triglycerides and insulin levels in the participant’s blood. The next step for this study will be to pinpoint exactly which spices used in the research will be the most beneficial and in what amounts.

It’s amazing how healing our food can be and, as we outlined in this post, Hippocrates’ words are still true today that our food should be our medicine and our medicine should be our food. Choosing to add high levels of spice into your meals isn’t the only way to achieve these heart healthy benefits. Encapsulated herbs allow you to achieve the benefits without including them in several meals each week.

Beyond Benefits for the Heart

Aside from NPR, Whole Living also outlined some great points on Turmeric recently and noted that in India, where Turmeric’s ability to heal wounds is well-established, you could once buy Band-Aids saturated with it! What a testament to this spice’s healing capabilities beyond benefits for the heart! Want to try it on your own? No Band-Aid is needed; apply a paste of Turmeric and water to a minor cut or skin irritation and leave on the area for up to an hour, then rinse off. Because of Turmeric’s history of dyeing fabric, don’t be surprised at discoloration that may occur.

Turmeric’s ability to heal the body, internally and externally, is something that has been known in India for thousands of years. Why are we only now taking advantage of this medicinal wonder? Find out more about Turmeric’s ability to assist your body in reducing inflammation, improving the appearance of skin, and keeping your brain healthy in this post. Turmeric’s benefits for the heart aren’t the only improvement you can see in your body with the addition of this powerful spice to your diet or herbal regimen!

With all the buzz surrounding Schizandra, we want to be sure you are aware of several options to improve how you look and feel that are Kroeger staff’s top three anti-aging favorites you’ll want to use time and time again.

Turmeric has many health benefits

Turmeric
Turmeric provides a natural glow while promoting a healthy digestive system

In 2010, the introduction of Turmeric to Kroeger Herb’s line of products was an exciting addition! I’ve shared how this spice can improve memory and digestive issues, however it’s actually one of the best kept beauty secrets known. Not only can taking a Turmeric capsule regularly provide a golden glow over time, but  helps you with clearer skin and a reduction in fine lines overall. Because of its powerful antioxidant qualities, using Turmeric can help sweep away free radicals which are known to speed the signs of aging. While you can see the difference on the surface of your skin over time, most antioxidants work within your body and actually improve the condition of your skin from the inside out to make you feel healthier. The benefits and improvement on skin conditions are beneficial, too.

Resveratrol Six
Six herbs combined in these capsules provide a natural anti-ager that’s beneficial for your entire body!

Since Resveratrol Six was introduced, this Herbal Combination has been popular with both men and women! Made with a powerful blend of herbs and Japanese Knotweed, Kroeger Herb’s Resveratrol Six provides your system with anti-aging and antioxidant benefits of several products in a single capsule. Each of the six herbs used in this combination provide a different type of support to the system and each has a unique benefit for anti-aging. Ginkgo has long been used to improve brain function and improve circulation to the extremities; Hawthorn keeps arteries clean and supports a strong heart; Pomegranate is a powerful antioxidant that keeps the heart healthy; Rosemary and Grape Seed, along with Japanese Knotweed are incredibly potent antioxidants and anti-agers. Moreover, Japanese Knotweed is actually the most concentrated source of naturally occurring resveratrol on the planet! A powerful antioxidant in grapes and red wine known as “resveratrol” helps reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, and premature aging. Take only two capsules each day and you’re on your way to healthy skin, improved cell function, a more efficient heart, and younger looking, too.

Grape seeds

Grape seeds have known to help with some types of poor circulation and high cholesterol.

Grape Seed
Small but powerful: Grape seeds act as a natural anti-ager and sweep away free radicals from your body

Last but definitely not least is our favorite Grape Seed. This powerful antioxidant is available in capsule form and functions as a natural sweeper of free radicals on the body’s system. Grape Seed has shown promise in not only preventing premature aging, but also is effective in reversing the signs of aging by removing free radicals from your body. While this product cost is approximately $25 (on the expensive end of encapsulated herbs), its botanical concentration is so powerful that only two capsules are needed daily. One bottle lasts for a month and a half; so you’ll be paying less than a dollar a day to improve the look and condition of your skin.

While Turmeric, Resveratrol Six, Grape Seed, and even Schizandra are touted for their benefits to your outer beauty, each herb works in their own powerful way to improve your body from the inside out providing a youthful glow, clearer complexion, and younger looking skin are the added bonus of sweeping away free radicals.

If you’ve never considered using natural herbs and spices to help achieve your wellness goals, now is a great time to start. The products we discuss in this blog from Kroeger Herb are special because we create them by hand with no fillers, binders, flowing agents, or excipients—a rarity in the industry today. It’s important to know what goes in the products you are using, even if they are applied topically. We have several natural products in our bath and body section on our sites that are of high quality and from trustworthy companies.
