Glutathione is called the Master Antioxidant and the Master Detoxifier. It is a natural substance produced in the body. It is also available through food and supplements. Because it is made in the body, glutathione is not considered to be an essential nutrient although many people consider it to be one of the most important links to good health.
The body makes glutathione from the amino acids L-Cysteine, L-Glutamic Acid, and Glycine and it’s in every cell. The liver especially has very high amounts of glutathione. It is used in metabolism, protein synthesis, prostaglandin synthesis, amino acid transport, and enzyme activation. Thus, every system in the body can be affected by glutathione levels. Those systems especially affected are the immune system, the nervous system, the gastrointestinal system and the lungs.
Glutathione is involved in the detoxification process of the body. It is also an important player in our defenses against environmental toxins and carcinogens. Glutathione attaches itself to toxic substances in the body aiding in their elimination. It protects cells from oxidative stress, helps fight viral infections, lowers inflammation and helps maintain a healthy immune system. Glutathione can help repair damaged cells caused by stress, radiation, pollution, infection and a host of other ailments. It is believed to boost the activity of other antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E. It also helps to regenerate other dietary antioxidants, further protecting the body from oxidative damage. Glutathione is a star player in the role of achieving and maintaining good health!
The antioxidant properties of glutathione can help prevent premature aging. It has been associated with slowing the process of age-related cognitive disorders as well as aging of the eyes, skin and body. In contrast, glutathione deficiency can contribute to the development of many different age-related diseases and conditions. As we age, glutathione production levels in the body drop significantly. This is believed to contribute to cognitive disorders and disease making supplementation even more important.
Vitamin C and Glutathione have even been shown to increase the percentage of normal sperm, sperm mobility, and sperm viability in infertile men with lowered sperm count. Glutathione also helps us reach peak mental and physical function. Research has shown that raised glutathione levels decrease muscle damage, reduce recovery time, increase strength and endurance and shift metabolism from fat production to muscle development.
Although Glutathione lives in every cell of the body it can be depleted by poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation. Additionally the body is unable to recycle its glutathione (a normal action in healthy bodies) when the toxin level is too high. This leaves us susceptible to oxidative stress, free radical damage, infections and other health issues. Our ability to produce and maintain a high level of glutathione is critical to recovery from nearly all chronic illness as well as to preventing disease and maintaining optimal health and performance. So, glutathione helps us achieve a healthy body and a healthy body helps us maintain a good amount of glutathione!
Good dietary sources of glutathione are whey protein, fish, eggs, brewer’s yeast, asparagus, avocado, garlic, onions, and nuts. Sulphur rich vegetables in the cruciferous family including broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, and watercress contain good amounts of glutathione. Exercise also boosts your glutathione levels and in turn helps boost your immune system, improve detoxification and enhance your body’s own natural antioxidant defenses.
Supplementation can be very beneficial. However, taking a glutathione supplement alone is not enough. We need to provide our body with the right tools so it can manufacture and successfully use its own store of glutathione. The production and recycling of glutathione requires many different nutrients. L- Methionine and N-Acetyl-cysteine (NAC) are glutathione precursors. They get the ball rolling in production. The B Vitamins and Selenium are very important in production and recycling. Antioxidants like Vitamins C & E work together to recycle glutathione for the body to reuse.
Hanna’s Herb Shop carries 2 very unique and exciting products:
- Reg’Activ Detox & Liver Health- contains the revolutionary probiotic strain Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3. Studied for over 20 years, ME-3 produces glutathione! This formula also contains Milk Thistle and L-selenomethionine for added glutathione production and liver support.
- Reg’Activ Immune & Vitality- contains the revolutionary probiotic strain Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3. Studied for over 20 years, ME-3 produces glutathione! This formula also contains Vitamin C and B complex, L-carnitine tartrate, and Lactobacillus brevis KP08 for added immune and energy support.
The ME-3 is considered a ‘Complete Glutathione System’ because it increases glutathione in the body 3 different ways. First, it produces glutathione itself. Second, it concentrates glutathione from its environment. And third, it regenerates oxidized or ‘used up’ glutathione back to its reduced, ‘active’ state.
Hanna’s Herb Shop also carries these supportive products:
L- Glutathione- Solgar- An important water soluble antioxidant that plays a role in protecting the body from free radical oxidative stress. A naturally occurring peptide composed of L-Cysteine, L-Glutamic Acid and Glycine.
L- Glutathione, Mega- Twinlab- A biologically active sulfur amino acid tripeptide compound containing L-Cysteine, L-Glutamic Acid and Glycine.
NAC (N- Acetyl- Cysteine)- Twinlab- A precursor of glutathione in the body and a stable sulfur-containing amino acid.
L- Methionine, w/ Vitamin B- 6- Now- Supports the production of glutathione and assists in natural detoxification processes.
Max-Amino Caps- Country Life- A combination of 16 different free form amino acids (including L-Glutamic Acid, L-Cysteine, Glycine, and L-Methionine) with added Vitamin B6 for utilization.
The combination of detoxification and free radical protection makes glutathione one of the most important antioxidants in our cells and one of the most important substances to supplement our bodies with!<< read less
