We would all love a healthy quick fix for wrinkles or glowing skin and while there’s no wonder supplement to provide an overnight miracle, there are options to promote the formation of healthy connective tissue resulting in beautiful skin! One of those options is a trace mineral called silica. Silica is one of the most abundant minerals in the world and a vital component of good health, particularly for skin, bones, hair and nails which are dependent on silica for strength and resilience. Because it is a building block of collagen, silica keeps skin supple, blood vessels strong, connective tissue healthy, and bones solid.  Though silica can be found in foods, most have lost the valuable content due to over refining and processing. By supplementing with a carefully prepared and easily absorbed form of silica you can not only look younger but feel better as well and we have a favorite! Flora Premium Vegetal Silica is prepared by utilizing a unique aqueous extraction method developed and patented by Dr. Louis Kervan of the University of Paris. This method of deriving a silicon extract from spring horsetail using only water, without any chemicals or solvents, ensures the vegetal silica is bonded or chelated to a group of water soluble bioflavonoids. Only silica chelated with bioflavonoids offers a safe and highly bioavailable form of silica which is easily assimilated by the body. By using this type of unadulterated form of silica the body is able to readily absorb the mineral and put it to good use right away. Aside from improving the look and feel of skin, silica is also beneficial to cartilage and ensures the integrity of tooth enamel, joints, and ligaments as well as being essential for collagen formation. Ready for tips on how to keep your skin healthy, no matter your age?

  • Washing your skin daily with a creamy cleanser is a good choice whether you have dry, combination, or oily skin. (Soap can over dry even the oiliest skin.)
  • If you’re using an abrasive scrub for skin and you’re over 30, consider switching to a gentler product that contains natural acids to assist in removing dead cells without damaging the surface of your skin.
  • Zinc aids in skin repair and can encourage healthy skin from the inside out.
  • Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to prevent premature aging and protect against the damage of UV rays. When applied topically is can boost collagen production and improve skin elasticity.
  • Vitamin C assists in the growth of cells and blood vessels and gives skin its firmness and strength. It is also an antioxidant and can help reduce the damage caused to skin by free radicals and sun exposure.
  • Copper promotes the production of collagen and elastin to improve the strength and elasticity of skin. Copper can also enhance the function of antioxidants in the body!
  • Sunblock is your friend, no matter your age. While you’re probably already aware that you should apply it to your face daily, your neck and chest could also use an application.
  • Use a night cream from a company you trust. While we sleep our skin works to build collagen and elastic tissues without stressors or aging triggers like sun or pollution. Night creams that contain vitamins A, C, and E as well as herbs like chamomile and calendula reduce inflammation and can boost collagen production. Aloe, olive oil, and jojoba protect the skin from excess moisture loss and are great ingredients to check the label for.
  • Our skin attempts to heal itself while we sleep so aim to get 8 hours of shut-eye. If that’s impossible in your life, do what you can and catch a nap whenever possible.
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Water is important for the proper function of your body and for healthy skin. Flush toxins, keep your skin flexible, reduce acne, and avoid dehydration.

Sunscreen Tips

Planning to enjoy the sun and fun for the Fourth of July? Keep these 3 tips in mind when you’re applying sunscreen to ensure you’re getting the best coverage and protection.

Planning to enjoy the sun and fun for the Fourth of July? Keep these 3 tips in mind when you’re applying sunscreen to ensure you’re getting the best coverage and protection.

  1. Layer it On—To get the best coverage possible, apply one coat of sunscreen to your body then wait 5 to 10 minutes and apply another coat. One ounce (or a shot-glass full) may seem like too much sunscreen but it’s actually the correct amount to get the protection advertised on the label.

Avoid the burn with these sunscreen tips.

  2. Reapply Regularly—“All-day protection” and “Waterproof” are misleading statements. Sunscreen should always be reapplied after swimming and toweling off and all sunscreen starts to degrade after two hours and should be reapplied; there’s no such thing as “all-day” sunscreen.
  3. Don’t Skimp—Remember the areas that are often skipped when applying sunscreen to ensure the best protection for your body. Elbows, tops of feet, ears, hair lines, and hands are often overlooked during application. Be mindful and get the proper coverage.
